One cylinder per room — the minimum standard

Every classroom, science lab, computer lab, and staff room in a Sindh school must carry at least one fully charged, certified fire extinguisher, mounted at the exit within arm's reach and matched to the room's hazards.

Use the extinguisher with P.A.S.S.

Four moves, in order. Every teacher and senior student should be able to run them without thinking — a dry drill each term makes it automatic.

PStep 1

Pull the pin

Break the tamper seal and pull the safety pin straight out. This unlocks the operating lever.

Aim at the base

Point the nozzle low, at the fuel feeding the flames — never at the top of the fire.

Squeeze the lever

Press the handle firmly and evenly to release the extinguishing agent in controlled bursts.

Sweep side to side

Move the nozzle across the base of the fire until it is fully out. Never turn your back on it.

If the fire grows or re-ignites, stop. Evacuate the room, close the door behind you, and call 1122. Extinguishers are for small, contained fires only — never risk lives fighting a large one.

First of every month

The two-minute expiry & readiness check

An expired or depressurised cylinder is a false sense of safety. On the first of each month, the room's safety monitor walks this checklist and signs the wall card so the whole school can see it was done.

  • Pressure gauge needle sits in the green zone

  • Expiry date is more than 30 days away

  • Safety pin and tamper seal are intact

  • Hose is crack-free and the nozzle is unblocked

  • Bracket is secure and the path to the cylinder is clear

Past expiry or needle in the red? Log it and report it to the school safety officer the same day — the cylinder must be replaced before classes continue.

Prevention first

The best fire is the one that never starts

  • Keep electrical boards dust-free and cords off the floor

  • Cap every gas or fuel line in canteens and science labs

  • Never block exits, corridors, or the path to an extinguisher

  • Run a timed fire drill every term and log it in the safety register
